How to design an adaptable space, office by day and moonlighting as a bedroom by night

Being asked to create a room for the show village at London Olympia's 'Ideal Home Show' 2018 has been a great adventure for us. Sophie Robinson, a friend from our days on GIDC, let us loose on this wonderful quirky space and we have had the best time coming up with solutions to the unusual shape and understanding the real reasons we would want to have a pod at the end of the garden. We are all running out of space, and we can make a new room without planning permission in our back garden, quite literally.

With no brief other than to create a space that reflects the changing times of our interiors, we were given a free reign! An open brief is a dream for any interior designer, so with real life in mind, we imagined a relaxed and multifunctional functional space with tons of character that wouldn't cost a fortune to recreate! Most of the furnishings are from high st retailers and with the trend in 2018 towards layering pattern we used our own wallpaper and fabric patterns in abundance to create a space that is full of character.

Our homes are becoming more than just places where we live and raise our family these days. They have to multitask as much as we do. So bearing this in mind it’s a perfect opportunity to have a pod at the end of the garden. One that transforms, an adaptable space operating as an office by day and moonlighting as a bedroom by night, a source of income with Airbnb, as well as the place to hang out with friends for kids, teens and adults alike; a place where we make memories.

The bed is designed to interchange, becoming a sofa and then back to a bed again depending on how you would want to use the space and there is even a hidden pull out desk secreted behind the bed! In fact all that is missing is a pull down screen and a projector to watch that 70’s classic movie.

So our Apex pod, with its challenging sloping walls was a great opportunity to showcase our new collection of wallpapers and fabric. The tropical wallpaper is one of our new colour-ways that we are loving for 2018. Alongside the tiger print, for us it is all about the tobacco and tan colour-way this year, super stylish with a nostalgic nod to our 70’s glamour inspired pod.

Our love of layering pattern meant we limited our colour pallet for the pod and in 2018 it has to be all about the warm Tabaco colours with its evocative 70’s undertone. Hopefully we have brought it out of that bland 70’s brown vibe by adding colour pops and loads of texture.

We also wanted to show how just by using high street brands it is still possible to create a beautiful space at an affordable price.

The habitat rug is a beautiful thing, grounding the multitude of pattern that surrounds it, the cushions from west Elm are full of texture and glamour and the wayfair chairs bring even more of the 70’s vibe that we were trying to create. It's the little touches of modernity such as the lights by Rockett st George and innermost that bring the design right up to date and those beautiful vases from Hillary and Flo that are full of character adding to the story.
